Restore the natural look and function of your mouth with dentures
Dentures
Dentures (artificial teeth) are a type of prosthetic device used to replace lost or missing teeth. Dentures are made up of either acrylic (plastic) or metal. Dentures can replace teeth in a non-invasive way.
A complete denture or full denture is one which replaces all the missing teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.
Partial dentures replace few of your missing teeth. They fill in the spaces left by lost or missing teeth and are supported by remaining teeth in the mouth by means of metal clasps.
At Life Care Dental Clinic Mysore, we provide custom-made full and partial dentures to make sure you get a perfect fit.
Why should I wear Dentures?
Teeth replacement can be done either by complete denture or partial denture. Complete or full dentures help you to eat comfortably and speak clearly and will improve your smile, confidence and health. there are gaps between your teeth. This will make your other teeth move irregularly to fill up the gaps left due to missing teeth. So you could end up with crooked or tilted teeth. Partial dentures (RPD) help in proper bite and prevent further damage to your remaining teeth.
When Dentures are prescribed?
- When there is difficulty in chewing or eating due to missing teeth
- When there is difficulty with speech or pronunciation due to missing teeth.
- When you need to restore the appearance of your smile and overall facial structure
What are the types of Dentures?
There are many types of dentures: Complete Dentures, Partial Dentures, Immediate Dentures, Over Dentures and Implant Supported Over dentures. The best option for you will depend on your individual situation.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures are given when all of your natural teeth are missing. These dentures are removable and can be fabricated to conform to your mouth with near-perfect accuracy.
Removable Partial Dentures
Removable partial dentures are given when few teeth are missing in your mouth.
- Treatment Partial dentures – They are made up of acrylic resin and are rigid.
- Flexible Dentures: They are made from thermo plasticised nylon material. They are light weight, thin, soft and flexible. Benefits of Flexible Dentures – They are;
- Very kind to soft tissues.
- Do not have metal wires (Clasps).
- Do not break if fallen.
- Effective in patients with known acrylic allergy.
- Cast Partial Denture: In this denture teeth are connected by a well-constructed metal framework. Metal based dentures better for long term oral health.
Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are used in situations when a tooth loss is planned and the patient is given a denture immediately upon tooth extraction and give you time to adjust. They will have to be replaced with permanent denture after couple of weeks. Benefits of Immediate Denture – patient is never without a tooth especially in the front teeth region.
Overdenture
An overdenture is a removable denture that fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth or implants. The natural teeth must be prepared to provide stability and support for the denture
Implant-supported Overdentures.
To increase the stability of a lower or an upper denture, it’s possible for it to be securely anchored using two or more dental implants. The upper jaw requires more implants (generally four or more) than the lower jaw due to a lesser bone density. Many people find this option offers a great balance of comfort, functionality and esthetics to their face.
How do I take care of my Dentures?
- Always clean your dentures after eating any food. The general rule is: brush and soak every day. Use a non-abrasive denture cleaner or toothpaste.
- Make sure you brush all the surfaces of the dentures including the surface that fits against your gums.
- To avoid bacterial accumulation dentures should be removed and cleaned carefully after every meal to remove any food particles.
- Dentures should not be worn at night. They should always be placed in a container with water or denture-cleaning solution overnight. This will help in removal of any plaque and stubborn stains that are left. It will also help to disinfect your dentures, leaving them feeling fresher.
- Regular visits to the dentist are still required to maintain your existing teeth and to check the fit of your dentures.
Jawbones and gums naturally shrink, causing dentures to fit less securely, presenting difficulty chewing, possible soreness and chances for infections after few years. It is important to visit the dentist regularly to have, not only the dentures, but also the overall oral tissue evaluated on a yearly basis.
