Fast and safe dental radiographs

Dental X-rays

What are Digital X-rays (Digital Radiographs)?

Digital X-ray (Dental radiographs) is the latest technology used to take dental radiographs. This technique uses an electronic sensor (instead of X-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged on screen (monitor) which helps us detect the underlying problems easily and faster. Digital x-rays reduce radiation exposure 80-90% compared to the traditional dental x-rays.

Why do dentists take X-rays

Dental x-rays are essential diagnostic tools that provide information not visible during a dental check-up. At Life Care Dental Clinic, we use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden problems and complete an accurate treatment plan.

What will an X-ray show??

  • Early signs of decay or cavity between the teeth.
  • Presence and severity of gum disease.
  • Presence of wisdom teeth and if there is a need for them to be removed.
  • Proximity of decay to nerves of the teeth.
  • Bone loss between the teeth.
  • Tooth fracture and bone fracture.
  • Abscesses or cysts or tumours.
  • Developmental abnormalities – extra teeth or missing teeth etc.
  • Any teeth that haven’t come through yet and number of teeth inside the mouth in children.
  • The amount of bone needed for dental implants

What are the different types of dental x-rays?

The 3 main types of dental x-rays include:

Periapical X-ray

These are dental x-rays often taken to look at the whole length of the tooth to help look for signs of decay or cavity, gum problems, cracks, bone loss between teeth, abscesses, infections etc.

Bite Wing X-ray

These are routine dental x-rays that help to look in between teeth to ensure that there are no cavities or tooth decay underneath the tooth structure.

OPG X-ray

These are dental radiographs that give the image of both upper and lower jaws. They are used to assess the health of the bone surrounding the teeth, the need for wisdom teeth removal, dental implants placement, etc.

Are dental X-rays safe

  • Digital x-rays produce a significantly lower level (80-90%) of radiation compared to traditional dental x-rays. They are taken only if it is absolutely necessary.
  • Not only are digital x-rays better for your safety, they are faster and more comfortable to take, which reduces your chair side time.
  • The digital image is captured electronically, there is no need to develop the x-rays, thus eliminating the disposal of harmful waste, lead foils and chemicals into the environment making it more environment friendly.
