Fill up the cavities in teeth damaged by decay or trauma

Teeth Filling or Dental filling

A filling is a procedure to restore a tooth damaged by decay or crack (fracture), back to its normal function and shape. When we do a filling, initially we remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area, and then fill the cavity with a filling. This prevents further spreading of dental infection into your tooth.

Why do I need fillings?

Dental fillings are used to repair decayed, chipped, worn out, discoloured or sensitive teeth.

Decayed teeth: Cavity occurs when there is too much sugar intake from your diet or when you aren’t cleaning your teeth regularly or carefully enough.

Broken (chipped) teeth: This often occurs from eating hard food, accidents from falls or sports. They can also occur from long term wear and tear as the tooth structure weakens over time.

Worn out teeth: Usually caused by clenching and grinding hard or brushing too hard on the tooth surface.

Discoloured teeth: This occurs when there is traumatic injury to a tooth due to falling and chipping of a tooth. It can harm the tooth’s enamel leading to discoloration of the tooth. Also Filling is needed when you are not happy with the appearance or colour of your teeth

What are the different types of fillings?

There are a number of different fillings, including:

  • Composite Fillings (Tooth Colored Fillings).
  • Glass Ionomer Fillings (White Fillings).
  • Amalgam (Silver Fillngs).

What are Composite fillings?

Composite fillings or Teeth bonding are popular choice for those who don’t want others to make out about their fillings when they speak or smile. These are tooth coloured and are made from powdered glass quartz, silica or other ceramic particles added to a resin base. After the tooth is prepared, the filling is bonded onto the area and it is exposed to special light to set. The dentist will choose a shade to match your own teeth. Less drilling of the tooth is necessary when placing composite as compared to amalgam filling.

What are Glass Ionomer fillings?

Glass Ionomer fillings or White fillings form a chemical bond with the tooth. They are made of acrylic and glass powders. They may also release fluoride, which helps to prevent further tooth decay. They are usually used on ‘non-biting’ surfaces such as around the ‘necks’ of the teeth etc. Little preparation is needed as the filling bonds directly to the tooth.

What are Amalgam fillings?

Amalgam fillings are silver coloured fillings. They are made by combining mercury and a silver alloy. This kind of filling is usually used on the chewing teeth. Before the filling can be placed, the dentist must prepare the area by removing all the decay and shaping the cavity to hold the filling in place. These fillings are strong and inexpensive, but also quite noticeable. They also require relatively more tooth preparation (drilling) than other types.
